Picking a Tool Kit

feel free to email me for help

  • Course only: you have everything and are already making blanks and your own reeds. This is for students who have learned all of the steps before but want to learn a new method or shore up their process. Double check the supply list below to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Kit #1, This is the best kit for people just starting out who don’t have any or many tools. It will give you everything you need. There are easier tip cutters for if you major in bassoon, although many professionals use this style of tip cutter.
  • Kit #2, This kit would carry you through college majoring in bassoon. The guillotine tip cutter makes cutting the tip easier and faster. The dial helps with finishing reeds and checking gougers and profilers.
  • Kit #3, This kit just provides the Sakakeeny style forming pins, drying rack, and holding mandrel; in case you have everything but want to try this new style of pin. I have tried every other style or forming pin and find this one to be the best due to the hilt which sets the diameter of the back of the reed, and the highly tapered tip which prevents the first wire from being too opened during forming, and possibly cracking the back.
  • Or you can buy individual tools yourself: Check out Nexus Woodwind and Midwest Musical Imports, or Barrick Stees' website for a premium reamer and dial indicator
